At the heart of directing is the ability to develop and communicate a clear artistic vision while bringing actors, text, and collaborators together in service of a shared story. This six-week workshop offers directors an immersive, hands-on opportunity to strengthen their rehearsal process while developing the practical skills needed to lead actors with confidence, clarity, and purpose.

Working with scenes from plays, participants will explore script analysis, table work, rehearsal techniques, and collaboration in an environment that encourages curiosity, creative risk-taking, and experimentation. Through guided instruction, presentations, and discussion, directors will deepen their understanding of the rehearsal room while developing their own approach to bringing a script from the page to performance.

This workshop welcomes both experienced directors looking to deepen and expand their creative process, as well as emerging directors seeking a structured, hands-on environment in which to develop their craft. At the heart of the workshop is the opportunity to collaborate with actors throughout the rehearsal process, putting ideas into practice through active scene work. Directors will rehearse with actors from the Stella Adler Studio or performers from their own artistic community and should expect to dedicate approximately three hours each week outside of class to rehearsals.

Throughout the workshop, you will:

• Explore techniques for analyzing scenes and preparing for rehearsal through script analysis and table work.
• Observe John’s process during the opening class as he demonstrates approaches to scene work, rehearsal, and collaboration with actors.
• Review audition self-tapes before the first class, cast performers for your scenes, and coordinate rehearsals using either actors from the Stella Adler Studio or performers from your own artistic community.
• Direct two scenes over the course of the workshop, presenting your work multiple times while incorporating feedback from John and your peers.
• Strengthen your ability to communicate adjustments, ask productive questions, and create a rehearsal environment that supports actors in delivering truthful performances.
• Practice offering thoughtful, constructive feedback to fellow directors while sharpening your eye for storytelling, performance, and staging.

By the end of the workshop, you will:

• Be able to develop and communicate a clear artistic vision throughout the rehearsal process.
• Build stronger collaborative relationships with actors and gain greater confidence leading rehearsals.
• Leave with practical tools for directing contemporary scenes and adapting your process to future productions.
• Better understand how thoughtful preparation, clear communication, and creative collaboration contribute to compelling theatrical work.
