Rick Crom

  • Stand-Up Comedy for Actors

Rick Crom does too many things.
Over the last 40 years he’s had simultaneous careers as a nightclub comedian, Broadway and film/TV actor, musical theater songwriter, and educator.

COMEDIAN

Starting his comedy career in Chicago, he came to New York in 1979 as part of the acclaimed improv group Chicago City Limits as their opening act and (since he also played the piano) musical director.

In 1984 he joined the now world famous Comedy Cellar as a regular act, and eventually permanent host for over 15 years. He still performs regularly at the Comedy Cellar.

He’s done stand up on HBO, MTV, Comedy Central, Showtime A&E as well as night clubs nationwide, Australia, Canada, and a few cruise ships he wishes to forget.

EDUCATOR

At the request of Joan See of the NY Conservatory for Dramatic Arts he developed a program called, “Stand-up Comedy for Actors” in 2007.

He broadened this program to include non-actors and brought it to the Comedy Cellar in 2010 where it is now in its 15th successful year and the most sought after comedy class in NY.

ACTOR

On Broadway Rick Crom has appeared in the musicals, “The Goodbye Girl” “Footloose” and “Urinetown”. Most recently he co-starred Off Broadway in The Atlantic Theater Company’s production of the Sarah Silverman musical, “The Bedwetter” which is slated for a Broadway production in 2025.

Television appearances include: “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “House of Cards”, “Divorce” “Louie” “Chappelles Show” “Ray Donovan” “Boardwalk Empire”.

On film he’s been featured in the movies, “The Post”, “Bros”, The Lennon Report”, and “The Big Gay Musical” for which he also wrote several songs.

COMPOSER/LYRICIST

Rick Crom is the award winning songwriter for one of the longest running Off Broadway revues, “Newsical The Musical” which enjoyed several productions, the most recent one lasting 10 years and garnered him several Drama Desk Nominations for best revue and best lyrics. He lost to Stephen Sondheim. His topical material was featured for many years at the Crystal Palace Theater in Aspen Colorado. His many Off Broadway and cabaret revues were honored with an ASCAP lifetime achievement award.
