The students spend morning class time working on their craft in voice and movement, technique and character. They then spend the afternoon working on script analysis by exploring commissioned original material. In addition, they will have guest lectures and workshops once a week. Students attend a mandatory ‘Meet and Greet’ in June, where they will meet the director and the playwrights. Classes are structured like a professional new play development process, with writers attending throughout the summer, making edits to the script, and answering questions from the actors.
Final showings of the work are free and open to the public.
Many of the commissioned plays from this intensive have gone on to have New York City productions using the original casts; three have been published; and one went on to win numerous writing awards. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about New York theatre from professionals currently working in the industry!
