The Devised Comedy Semester

The Stella Adler Studio’s Comedy Division is a creative hub dedicated to the craft of comedic performance for stage and screen. Blending rigorous training with bold experimentation, students explore the history, structures, and techniques of comedy while developing original work in a collaborative and risk-friendly environment. Through sketch, stand-up, improvisation, solo performance, and devised theater, students cultivate their unique comedic voices as both writers and performers, grounded in truth, commitment, and ensemble.

Semester Focus
This upper-level studio semester offers an immersive exploration of comedy’s historical foundations and its contemporary landscape. Students deepen their craft through writing, rehearsal, performance, and critical feedback while refining their artistic process through iteration.
A central principle of the semester is learning to de-center the self and instead re-center the writing, strengthening clarity, point of view, and comedic storytelling.

Students will:

  • Study major forms of stage and screen comedy
  • Develop new original material through weekly writing and performance labs
  • Identify the contemporary comedic community or landscape to which they aim to contribute
  • Create and perform an original devised comedy piece
  • Collaborate with peers in a supportive
    ensemble process

Culminating Performance
The semester concludes with a public showcase at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (242 East 14th Street). The performance integrates writing, performance, and design while celebrating each artist’s evolution as a comedic storyteller.

Courses Include:

  • Improvisation for the Stage
  • Improvisation for Film, Television,
    and Voice Over
