Fall 2025 Transfer Track – “Awareness Without Judgement”
As we look at the excellent acting techniques that the 20th century brought to us to help us grapple with the actors’ dilemma, to become another human being, the techniques of Stella Adler are both unique and powerful. Awareness Without Judgement gives Tisch undergraduate acting students, who weren’t placed at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, for the first time ever the opportunity, within their undergraduate training, to immerse themselves in these techniques.
The course includes:
- Adler’s Foundation Technique, which roots the actor in place, action, given circumstances, and expansive use of the imagination.
- Character class, which offers an approach to character through the portal of archetypes, costumes, study of paintings and periods.
- Stella’s famous Script Interpretation class which takes a deep dive into texts focusing on the playwright, the playwright’s big ideas, the big ideas that animate the play, the social situation the play emerges from and that the play addresses.
- Scene Study will be the class where all of this work will come together.
What makes these pillars of the techniques of Stella Adler so unique and powerful is Stella Adler’s unabashed cry for depth of heart and mind and size of soul. Stella Adler sought to nurture the empowered actor. She wanted actors to see themselves as co-creative members of the creative act of play, film or television production. “Your talent is in your choice.”
For Stella Adler, the goal of training was never merely the actor’s ability to get work but rather the actor’s ability to become an ever evolving human being for the sake of making themselves a worthy vessel for the big ideas great plays contain. “Growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous.” Actors who take this 14 week journey will be strengthened thereby not only as actors but also as artists and as human beings.
